COBOL Developer (REMOTE, PART-TIME)

Koniag Data Solutions, LLC, a Koniag Government Services, is seeking a skilled COBOL Developer to join our team. This role is critical in maintaining and enhancing legacy systems while supporting modernization initiatives within production and potential development/testing environments. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in COBOL programming and mainframe environments, with a strong understanding of business applications.

Essential Job Functions:
The COBOL Developer will maintain, enhance, and support business applications written in COBOL. Principal responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Write and modify COBOL, COBOL Language Extender (COBOL LE), and IBM MVS JCL code
  • Use tools such as DISA Multi-host Internet Access Portal (MIAP) and Reflection ZFE for 3270 terminal emulations
  • Troubleshoot and fix production issues under guidance of senior team members
  • Assist in creating and maintaining technical documentation including:
  • Application operating and installation instructions
  • Interface diagrams and product design documentation
  • Interface Control Documents (ICD) for the Corporate Data Repository System (CDRS)
  • Perform code testing and participate in code reviews
  • Support FTP and SFTP transmission operations
  • Implement Help Desk resolutions for Level II and III tickets
  • Apply STIGs to applications as directed to ensure compliance
  • Monitor database load and interface applications
  • Provide technical support for the maintenance of data and related software modules
  • Work with Change Requests (CR) and Deficiency Reports (DR) in the Information System Management Tool (ISMT)
  • Support system releases, including documentation preparation
  • Participate in team meetings and scrum ceremonies
  • Create test cases and assist with test reports and summaries
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
  • 8+ years of experience in COBOL programming
  • 4+ years of experience with JCL, VSAM, DB2, and CICS
  • Experience with mainframe debugging tools and utilities
  • Experience with DISA mainframe environments, preferred
  • CompTIA Security+ Certification (current)
Required Skills and Competencies:
  • Working knowledge of COBOL, IBM MVS JCL, and related mainframe technologies
  • Familiarity with mainframe terminal emulation tools
  • Understanding of mainframe architecture and operating systems (z/OS, MVS)
  • Experience with batch processing and online transaction processing
  • Ability to analyze and resolve technical issues with guidance
  • Knowledge of STIG compliance requirements
  • Experience with FTP and SFTP protocols
  • Familiarity with Help Desk ticketing systems
  • Ability to create and maintain technical documentation
  • Basic experience with database monitoring and data extraction
  • Knowledge of software development methodologies
  • Good debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Time management skills with ability to meet deadlines
