Facilities Maintenance Assistant

At the direction of the Property Manager, this highly independent and hands-on role is responsible for landscaping, upkeep, inspections, maintenance, general repairs and associated processes of buildings and grounds on the Tinker Island and Fern Road properties. This role is part of a team maintaining the landscape/grounds of an established and pristine private estate on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Additionally, this role will be responsible for operating and maintaining on property boat as required.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Property Related Duties

  • Conduct property inspections to ensure property operation of all systems
  • Perform general maintenance and janitorial tasks on properties as required and directed by Property Manager while independently assessing property needs, prioritizing work, and proactively maintaining the grounds to the highest standards
  • Perform general maintenance of equipment, mowers, tractors, ATVs, plumbing, irrigation- coordinate with vendors as appropriate
  • Maintain the solar system and conduct routine battery checks
  • Monitor fire extinguisher effectiveness: Perform monthly inspection, maintenance, and annual inspection and tagging
  • Maintain light bulb inventories and replacements at appropriate intervals
  • Perform landscaping duties on the property as directed by the Property Manager including mowing, trail and path maintenance, weed whacking, raking/blowing leaves, installing trees, cutting felled trees, shoreline cleanup
  • Snow removal and plowing
  • Responsible for gardening on Tinker Island
  • Clean outbuildings and equipment
  • Paint as needed including boat
  • General grounds maintenance on Bartlett’s Landing – tree felling

Boat Related Duties

  • Inspect and monitor boat and perform general maintenance and repairs
  • Pressure wash float and pier weekly and as needed
  • Escort and shuttle contractors via boat to and from Tinker Island as needed
  • Maintain supplies as needed, such as gas and diesel for equipment and coordinate fueling of boat as needed
  • Seasonal maintenance for several floats/moorings/piers at various client properties in the area

Qualifications, Education, Experience, Skills, and Knowledge:

  • Ability to safely operate and navigating a 28’ Crowley Beal lobster boat (no fishing involved)
  • Outboard mechanic certification required
  • Captain’s license preferred
  • Proficiency with equipment such as tractors, chainsaws, hand tools
  • Skills in carpentry and construction
  • General mechanical, electrical knowledge/skills desired
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and self-management
  • Ability to operate/drive a tractor (John Deere 5320) with attachments as well as safely operate additional equipment as needed (e.g., bucket loader)
  • Ability to safely operate chainsaws, zero turn mower, Bush Hog, Flail mower attachments
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems preferred
  • Ability to lift and shift 70lbs and conduct strenuous and physically demanding tasks
  • Ability to build and maintain trusted relationships internally/externally
  • Ability to be flexible as tasks and priorities are variable and evolve
  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without required sponsorship
  • Must pass pre-employment and ongoing background checks, which include a review of criminal, credit and driving record history
